"The loneliest people are the weak preyed on by society."

If you disagree, find a quote that refutes the theme and suggest your own.

  1. She turned on him in scorn. "Listen, Nigger," she said. "You know what I can do to you if you open your trap?" Crooks stared hopelessly at her, and then he sat down on his bunk and drew into himself. Crooks seemed to grow smaller, and he pressed against the wall. "Yes, ma'am." "Well you keep your place then, Nigger. I could get you strung up on a tree so easy it ain't even funny." Crooks had reduced himself to nothing. There was no personality, no ego--nothing to arouse either like or dislike. He said, "Yes, ma'am," and his voice was toneless.

I agree with this quote because Curley's wife preyed on Crooks. At the ranch, he was considered weak because of his color and physical condition. He was black, crippled, and had to sleep in a barn by himself. That made him easy to prey upon.

"Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don't belong no place. . . . With us it ain't like that. We got a future. We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us. We don't have to sit in no bar room blowin' in our jack jus' because we got no place else to go. If them other guys gets in jail they can rot for all anybody gives a damn. But not us."

The loneliest may seem strong at first but they really aren't. It's just the anger that they keep deep inside of them making them seem as if the can control their feelings. However the ones that are really strong are the ones with someone they have to care about someone they have to protect. The strength comes from the wanting of protecting something thats dear to you. With out that the lonely one is weak and and there for preyed or rejected by society.

  3. I agree with Linday's quote. Crook couldn't be with others because he was a colored man. He couldn't go into the bunk house or play cards with the other men, because he was black. Not only did Curly's wife prey on Crook, but she also preyed on Candy.

"Old Candy was watching her, fascinated."If you was to do that, we'd tell," he said quietly. "We'd tell about you framin' Crooks."
"Tell an' be damned," she cried. "Nobody'd listen to you, an' you know it. Nobody'd listen to you." Candy subsided. "No...." he agreed. "Nobody'd listen to us."

I also agree with this quote, because it would've been Candy's word against the daughter-in-law of the boss. Curly's wife preyed on Candy, they weren't going to believe him. Candy was just an old man and because of this he was considered weak by society.

The quote shows how the weak are the ones preyed on by society. Crooks being a black and crippled man gave Curley's wife the advantage of crushing him with powerful words knowing that nothing Crooks could say would affect her.

Loneliness can be felt and realized in many ways. Quite a few characters in the story confess to being lonely, but Steinbeck produces an amazing display of male friendship in Lennie and George. Being lonely is really brought upon by oneself. People allow themselves to be isolated by society, therefore they are rejected and even looked down upon. Having a close companion whether it's a spouse, a best friend, or a mentally disabled co-worker can enstill hope and the desire to succeed. By providing someone with happiness, they will return the favor.
